I looked around again and noticed there was another of those metal flask things by the bench, like the one in the bookstore. I glanced in both directions. Then I picked it up, unscrewed the lid, and sniffed.
I recognised what it was, although I had never smelled that ruddy, pungent smell before. It was a flask full of diesel fuel...
It had become a sort of public spectacle, watching my lovers get eaten.
A crowd had gathered in the Colosseum, despite the stifling heat of the day. They said it had become more popular than chariot races. But these events had no teams. Just a man, alone in the center of the stadium...
The Hotel Montclair (excerpt)
Well this man’s theatre was a dirty little thing. Ah, what was his name again? Maria would remember it. Oh yes, he was called Antonio Romero. Well Antonio Romero’s theatre was cramped and it stank and all his buddies were so drunk you could smell them from San José. But boy did they love my little movie. It turned out half of them had been trying to get into Hollywood for years and they came to me, begging to be in my next film. I was astonished. So I kept making movies, movie after movie. They started showing them at other small theatres around the area. They were all silly things, with lots of running through streets with handsets. Well one day here comes a producer from a studio and he finds me at my little apartment...
